How do YOU get things done?
Do you ever wonder how you get things done? What is it that makes the difference between doing something and not doing it?
Usually, how you do anything is how you do everything. That is worth repeating:
How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything!
Struggling to do something and aren’t following through? The answer could lie in the things you are doing.
When was the last time you stopped and thought about why you do what you do?
Have you audited what you are doing? Or do you just do it and don’t notice.
If you need some ideas on how to start noticing, you might enjoy my post about stopping to smell the roses!
Back to getting things done or not.
How Do You Buy Dresses?
There are really only a few ingredients in a decision to do something or not to do it.
Usually, you have a thought first. It’s like going shopping for a new dress. You like the idea, the look of it and now you want to try it on before you buy.
So, to make it a bit harder I am going to throw in an obstacle to help you think about this a bit differently.
The problem is that it’s not a new dress, it’s a pattern for a dress and you must make it or have it made up for you. And that’s a commitment of time and money and you don’t really know if that is what you really want.
Are you ready for the commitment?
The dilemma is that you cannot try it on, until you’ve made it. And you won’t know if you want to make it, until you have tried it on to see if it suits you.
Can you hear the conversation already going on in your head?
That’s right! That one right there.
What flavour is the conversation going on in your head?
- Well, this is going to take some time, do I really need this?
- It’s okay, I can just buy it anyway and if it isn’t right that’s okay.
- Maybe I can just buy one off the peg.
- I believe this is the only dress for me and I MUST have it.
These are a few ideas, you catch my drift 😉.
You may find that you have similar attitudes and conversations whenever you have to make some bigger decisions.
Let’s make this a little more real, because these days we mostly buy dresses off the peg.
So, let’s say you decided to put your health as your number one priority.
And you go to check out a brand-new gym. At the end of the tour of the gym the membership team do their best to get you to sign up for membership on the spot.
Can you see a similar set of conversations going on in your head?
- It’s a big commitment financially and timewise, do I really need this?
- It’s okay, I can just sign up anyway and if it isn’t right that’s okay.
- Maybe I can just exercise by myself.
- I believe this is the only gym for me and I MUST join it now.
Looking for patterns is one way so you can become aware of what makes you follow through to get things done.
Next time you are doing something you find easy to follow through on, stop and check in with the conversation going on in your head.
Here’s to your next decision.
