How To Have More Good Days

How To Have More Good Days

Have you thought about what makes a day, a good day?

What if you could have more good days?

What if you could make every day (or at least most days) a good day?

How would you even know you had a good day?

These are questions I asked myself after I realised that really didn’t have any answers off the top of my head or rolling off my tongue.

I realised I was setting myself up for failure, if I didn’t even know what a good day would look like.

How To Set Yourself Up For Success And Have More Good Days

Let’s start with defining good

I know for some people good could be a step down! I am not going to debate what good is relative to great, excellent or outstanding! That is for another day!

Would you agree, that if you had more days where you felt satisfied at the end of the day that you had made the most of it, it would be a good day?

A Good Day = Feel Satisfied I Achieved What I Set Out To & That I Made The Most Of It.

That might not be your definition, and if you have one that you have to hand that is awesome.

If you don’t then borrow mine for a while and see how it fits.

The Curse Of The Overachiever

How I discovered this, was by reflecting on my desire to be an overachiever! There was always more to do. Projects were long and complex and I didn’t give myself a pat on the back for any milestones.

If you live like this, the consequence is a huge amount of dissatisfaction.

And if you continue to take on extra things you get to the point where you never seem to get on top of things and the O-word sets in… Overwhelm!

The O-Word – OVERWHELM

Unless your definition of satisfaction is feeling overwhelmed, I would say it is not really possible to feel satisfied and overwhelmed at the same time.

You can’t feel satisfied and overwhelmed at the same time!

I cannot think of a time when I have.

Does this sound familiar to you?

What does a satisfying day look like?

Does it look like sitting down with your husband or partner and taking a moment to celebrate the day that was?

Looking back on your day with a smile and the feeling of happiness and fulfillment.

Was it because you experienced any or all of the following:

  • you made progress,
  • you knew what you were going to do and you did it,
  • you had harmony across several areas of your life,
  • you took time to stop and smell the roses,
  • you celebrated,
  • you loved,
  • you contributed or
  • you served others.

Notice, I didn’t have an option that you were in some fantastic holiday location or doing something epic.

Set yourself up to have good days, no matter where you are.

How Can You Set Yourself Up For Successfully Having More Good Days?

OverwhelmI learnt this about 10  years ago, I was suffering from complete adrenal fatigue and I had to really slow it down or otherwise burn out completely.

My life was a constant and huge to do list. It never got shorter, in fact it was multiplying! And I was saying ‘Yes’ to way too many things.

When I realised how bad my health was, at first, I thought I would never get anything done at all. And I thought my life and family, would completely fall apart.

It finally dawned on me that each day I was coming into the day with this impossible list. And each day I was exiting it with maybe 1 to 3 things crossed off.  The rest bumped forward to the next day or some other time in the future.

What if I just wrote myself a list of 1 to 3 things maximum that I would get done that day? How would I feel at the end of the day?

I would certainly feel better than having this endless rolling list of to do items!

In order to do this, I had to give myself permission to just do 1 to 3 things each day.

Nothing really changed, just my perception of it.

These days, I still write only 1 to 3 things maximum that I plan to get done that day.

Some days, I get through those 1 to 3 things quickly and then I can celebrate. If appropriate I can do some extra things, but I only add one doable one at a time to make sure I still win my day!

Instead of feeling that I am hopelessly drowning in a sea of things to do, I now end the day having:

WON MY DAY – one small thing at a time – one ✅ off the list at a time.
