It's demolition day! Those are tough words. Does that sound exciting or scary?
Let's get rid or the idea of a scary demolition day! We are going to move over to the much more gentle and appropriate idea of Marie Kondo'ing your life instead!
I love how Marie Kondo says it:
"We should be choosing what we keep, not what we want to get rid of." - Marie Kondo
Welcome Back
Welcome back to our "Midlife Makeover" series, where you are discovering how to transform your life from the inside out, just like you would a house to get it ready for it's next chapter.
I'm Angela Rettie, your guide on this journey of transformation. Today we're are going to focus on clearing out what not longer serves you so that you can make space for the new you.
So far you've made your Blueprint or vision for you life , you've got the start of your plan and your first actions and now it's time to start the real work.
In a home renovation, this is where the walls come down and old structures are dismantled to make way for the new.
In our midlife makeover, it's all about clearing out what no longer serves you - whether it's old habits, beliefs, or relationships.
Much like in home renovation, it's messy, it's chaotic, and it's absolutely necessary.
The same is true for your midlife makeover. It's time to uncover and let go of old habits, beliefs, and relationships that no longer serve you, to make space for the new you.
The key here is to approach this stage with a sense of openness and curiosity, accepting that change is not only inevitable but also beneficial.

Why Do We Find It Hard To Clear Out The Old?
The desire to cling to the familiar is a hardwired natural human tendency. If you are feeling this part of the process is tough, you are not alone.
Simply applying logic to it, doesn't always help! And even though we know that change is necessary for growth, it can be tough to do what is needed.
It's time to bring in the big guns to help with this one!
You cannot move forward without first letting go of what no longer serves you.
Letting go is not about forgetting or discarding valuable experiences, rather it's about releasing the things that weigh you down and prevent you from moving forward.
These may be old habits, outdated beliefs, and relationships that no longer benefit you. Each of these can drain our energy and make it hard for us to embrace the new possibilities that lie ahead.
And instead of getting you to delve into what those are, I like to to do it a bit differently, so read on.
Are You Ready To Make Space For The New You?
Have you ever gone to do something, and decided it's the wrong time or you don't feel ready to do it?
We all have! The trouble is, this can be one of the things holding you back.
Everything has to be the right time, or it has to be done just right. If this is you, you probably see this in many areas of your life.
It's NEVER going to be the right time!
It's NEVER going to be done just right.
Have you ever gone and just done something almost without thinking about it?
What was the difference between the two?
- What did you do differently when you just got started and did it?
- Did you say something to yourself?
- Did you do something?
- Did you remember a time when you had done something similar?
- Did you just know that you didn't want to wait and regret not doing it?
There's a saying that goes something like this.
Question: When's the best time to plant an apple tree?
Answer: 20 years ago.
Question: When's the second best time to plant an apple tree?

You Have A Choice About How To
Make Space For The New You
Some people know exactly what they don't want to keep and some know exactly what they do want.
We are going to look at this from both sides, to make sure this isn't a stumbling block for anyone. Either way you will free up space for you to add more of what works for you. You get to choose which approach works best for you.
Making Space For The New You
Identify What Needs To GO
- Old habits that don't contribute to your well-being.
- Beliefs that limit your potential or hold you back from achieving your goals.
- Relationships that drain your energy or make you feel undervalued.
What are the habits, beliefs or relationships that don't spark joy, hold you back and don't support your transformation?
Identify What Needs To STAY
- Habits that strengthen your well-being.
- Beliefs that open up opportunities and move you forward.
- Relationships that nourish you and fill up your energy cup. These are the people who value you.
What are the habits, beliefs or relationships that spark joy and support your growth and transformation?
This process is similar to inspecting a house before the demolition. You need to know what to keep and what to let go, what is structurally sound, and what needs to be replaced.
This takes brutal honesty. Dig Deep. You are in the right place.
This takes brutal honesty. And this may be where you need to seek extra support to work through this part.
One of the ways you can start is through raising your own awareness of what you may not be noticing. That is exactly what we do during my FREE 7 Day Envision & Experience Your Future Class. Another option is to work through this with one on one or in a group.
Dig deep, and know that you are in the right place.
"There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you."
~ Maya Angelou ~
This quote from Maya Angelou tells of the agony of not doing the things we need to. And as hard as this part can be, if you don't do it, you could end up having regrets.
I believe that you have something for the world, you have a gift to share, a legacy to create and embracing this now and doing whatever it takes, could that be exactly what you need?
Strategies For Clearing Out What Doesn't Serve You Any More To Make Space For The New You
By now, you will know there are some things to let go of. For some it may be as simple as the Marie Kondo process of acknowledging it for it's service, and letting it go on its way.
For others, you may need to dig a little deeper and try some different strategies.
Here are a few to consider:
- Journalling - taking time to write down your thoughts aobut any habits, beliefs or relationships that are causing you stress or holding you back.
- Reflection - reflecting on your life so far. What parts of it bring you joy, satisfaction and feeling fulfilled? And what parts drain your energy or diminish your sense of self-worth?
- Self-Care - give yourself permission to give yourself time, space and what brings you joy and nourish your body, mind and spirit or soul.
- Mindfulness - is a powerful tool that helps you to stay present and aware of your own thoughts, feelings, emotions and behaviours. It can help you to identify patterns that are no longer serving you.
- Tapping or Emotional Freedom Technique - very specific techniques that guide you through a process of letting go
- Seeking support from a community where you can share your experiences and gain insights from others who are going through similar life transitions
The sun always shines again after a storm
Just like in a house renovation, this demolition stage can be messy and uncomfortable.
You might find yourself questioning your decisions or wondering if you're doing the right thing. That's totally okay.
In a renovation, you often have to live with the chaos before you can enjoy the finished product.
The same is true in a midlife makeover. This transition period might be challenging, but it's a necessary step towards creating a life that truly fulfills you.

As messy and uncomfortable as that has all been, trust that after the storm, the sun always shines, sure as day follows night and spring follows winter.
