Small things make the difference in so many different ways.
There are so many sayings around the small things that aggregate together into a larger collective.
You may have heard:
Take care of the pennies and the pounds (dollars) will take care of themselves.
A journey of a thousand miles starts with just one step!
How much attention do you give the smallest things in our lives?
Do you ever wonder how many drops make up the ocean? Because every body of water is an agglomeration of drops!
If you think about our own body, where does our energy come from?
Our cells! They make the energy when they have the right ingredients.
We are made up of trillions of cells.
It is definitely the small things that can make or break us.
In the case of our body, one small cell that doesn’t work or gets damaged can replicate into cancer or disease that affects our whole body.
Small Actions Make a Difference Too
It isn’t just the physical things that make a difference, our actions do too.
Mother Teresa said:
Be Faithful In Small Things Because It Is In Them That Your Strength Lies
This quote is all about keeping going even when you don’t think you are making a difference.
Small things add up. When we do them consistently, we get stronger.
When we help one person get stronger, they can help someone else.
A snowball effect! Our actions grow in so many ways.
Have faith in making the small changes.
If you are on a journey and make just a one-degree change in direction, over time this small change makes a huge difference to your final destination.
How can we use the small things that make the difference in our lives for good?
Using the small things, the small changes, the small shifts, the small upgrades, the small improvements are a great way to start the ball rolling (or the snowball).
If you have found it difficult to make big changes in the past, it could be that you were trying to change too much at once or make too big a change that sets off our survival mechanisms in our brain.
We are wired to notice big changes and often they are seen as threats. The survival part of our brains put up barriers to protect us.
It doesn’t know that this is important to do unless you let it know by your ongoing commitment to the changes, a high frequency of repetition and you push through the pain to show how important it is to you.
If our brain doesn’t see that this is a good change, it just wants to keep the status quo and works against us.
Small things and changes fly under the radar. And gives our brains a chance to work with us, rather than against us.
That’s another reason why small changes can be so powerful.
The brain has time to adjust to the tiny change, that is still within its comfort zone. And you can keep repeating by making small changes gradually over time for an incredible effect.
Find the smallest thing that you can do and do that.
Do that and do that until it’s no longer something you even have to think about, then find the next small thing you can do.
What small thing can you do today to help you build more strength or get you closer to a goal or desire?
What’s one small thing that you can choose to accomplish by the end of this month, quarter or year?
Let’s discover what you can accomplish in 30 days.
As an example, you might want to move more in your day. You could set an alarm during your day with your favourite dance music and when it went off you danced for the duration of the song. Somewhere between 2 to 3 minutes.
If you did that every day for a month, you would have danced 60 to 90 minutes more than if you hadn’t set that alarm. Small things add up.
If you are desk-bound during the day, this could encourage you to make it part of your routine and maybe you do this once every couple of hours. Do it once to start with though and after 30 days make it twice a day.
What small thing could you do that would add up by the end of a month? What do you choose to do?
It doesn’t matter where you are in a month, or a year, now is always the best time to start. Because tomorrow never comes.
Let me know in the comments, what small thing that will make the difference do you choose to do? And what’s one thing that you will do to ensure you follow through to achieve it?
Until next time,
